Behind the Surface examines the works of three Indonesian artists Stefan Buana (b.1971), Rudi Hendriatno (b. 1980) and Afdhal (b. 1982) that challenge the notion of perception and invite us to look into other possibilities of meanings behind what is presented before our eyes. Stefan Buana, Rudi Hendriatno and Afdhal are members of SAKATO Art Community, a group consisting of artists that originally comes from West Sumatra, but study, live and work in Yogyakarta. Their works, although individually differ in style and subject-matter, carry the traditional philosophy of the Minang's (the West Sumatra’s ethnic group) culture where duality, poetry and playfulness come together.
