Portraits of Nature by Choo Meng Foo, 04 - 26 February 2012 at Galeri Utama. Portraits of Nature promotes the appreciation of nature through observation and photographic documentation. This exhibition is the culmination of more than 7 years' hard work on artist Choo Meng Foo's part. The works at Portraits of Nature span three categories -- Portraits of Arthropod (translates loosely to insects), Portraits of Trees and Video Works. Works featured under Portraits of Arthropods make the usually tiny arthropods look larger than life. It is a closer look at arthropods and their forms, behaviour, locomotion and habitat. Portraits of Trees captures the intriguing patterns found in leaves, branches and trunks of trees. These portraits explore form and texture, movement and stasis, foreground and background, light and shadows, saturation and hue with possibilities afforded with digital photography. Video Work is designed to show richness of the natural environment that is often overlooked by city dwellers going about their everyday lives. The video aims to highlight these treasures, and bring to attention the diversity and wonders of the nature that are often ignored. Singaporean photographer Choo Meng Foo and sound designer Jason Ang Mingqi created this video. The original composition by Jason Ang Mingqi explores the contrasting aspects of fear and comfort that nature can bring. The sounds are being recorded live from Fort Canning Park itself and layered upon with ambient pads.
