How long have you lived in Singapore?
I moved to Singapore in 2002 a bit by chance. I had first hoped to live in Japan, but it did not work out. Things have gone quite well for me here, so I believe that it wasn't really by chance that I ended up in Singapore.

How has your work been influenced by living in Singapore?
Living in Singapore has definitely inspired my wall painting at Tanglin Camp. Actually it was done "for Singapore". The organic shapes are linked to the tropical climate. Although it took some time to express, I am very much influenced by the environment where I live. I enjoy the lush freedom of nature here. My new work is going in this direction.

What has it been like to work on the Singapore Biennale 2006 as an artist doing a wall painting installation and a designer for the advertising campaign, which promoted the SB2006?
I look at them as two separate projects. The advertising campaign was a commission. The theme "Belief" is not mine. Writing in English is also not me. I am French and use the French language to express myself in my text-based pieces. Yet I very much enjoyed working with designer Theseus Chan who gave me complete freedom. The concept was his. I did the drawings and trusted him to use them in his designs.

Have the two projects influenced each other?
If so, how could you describe the process? My design background is less and less important. I don't want to be part of a design team. I want to keep my position as an artist and from time to time collaborate on projects that revolve around fine art. I did work at Tanglin Camp early enough so that Theseus could come and photograph some of the imagery to use as a link in his branding of the Singapore Biennale 2006.

What "Belief" are you referring to in your wall installation "Occupation Bleue"?
The work in Tanglin shows how there is no control in the jungle. Its "occupation" is constant; it cannot be controlled. In Singapore we like to control things but cannot really. My work is like a vine, no framing on the floors or walls. Nature and art are similar; you must just "let go"! My work is the opposite of control and concept. "Liking" or "not liking" what I am doing is not important for me. The process is more important than the result. It is more interesting to see what comes out, let go, and accept! Sincerity is at the heart of my work. I want to reach oneness with my environment and with myself.

Tell us more about your "Occupation Bleue" wall painting.
The choice of blue reminds me of the blue ink in my ballpoint pen from my school days. It focuses more on the essence or basics, rather than artifacts or effects. It's like the "automatic drawing" or "doodling" that I did on my school notebooks. It has a lot to do with spontaneity and sincerity. Mistakes do not exist for me, you cannot be wrong. It is actually more interesting to use what we call a "mistake" instead of destroying it.
