![]() ‘Road to Recovery’ This painting conveys and expresses feelings and thoughts about being in prison vs freedom. 09 – 25 Sep, Singapore Art Museum, 71 Bras Basah Road Held at the Singapore Art Museum for the third time, the exhibition will feature original artworks by inmates weaving their creativity to illustrate the struggles faced on the path to reintegration. The artistic creations of 15 inmates and ex-offenders were selected as winning entries of the Yellow Ribbon Art Competition Finals 2011 in July. The winners were chosen from a total of 401 entries, by a panel of external judges comprising leading members of the local arts community. The Yellow Ribbon Art Competition Finals was graced by Mr. Peter Seah, Chairman of DBS Bank and Chairman of Lasalle College of the Arts. He said, “Art is a powerful language through which inmates can express their innermost feelings and reflect on their past. Many of the messages expressed in the artworks are inspired by their families, whose encouragement and belief in them is the key to unlock the second prison.” In addition to selecting the competition winners, the event also saw the introduction of the Yellow Ribbon Champions initiative. The initiative is a partnership programme between the Yellow Ribbon Project (YRP) and organisations who have been strong supporters of the YRP. The Singapore Art Museum was unveiled as the first Yellow Ribbon Champion. Visitors interested in adopting art pieces in support of the Yellow Ribbon Fund may also do so via the online catalogue: www.yellowribbonprisonarts.sg. The public can also look forward to an Open House on September 24th, where they can participate in an array of exciting hands-on activities for the whole family. Started in 2004, the Yellow Ribbon Project is a community initiative in Singapore that aims to create awareness of the need to give second chances to ex-offenders, generate acceptance of ex-offenders and their families in the community, and inspire community action to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders into society. Admission is free to the Yellow Ribbon Art Exhibition gallery, while admission to other galleries applies. More information is available at: www.yellowribbon.org.sg.
