Gallery 1.11 at 8Q sam presents: AbstractusTill 14th June, Gallery 1.11 at 8Q sam |
![]() Gallery 1.11 at 8Q sam was inaugurated last month with the opening of the exhibition Abstractus. The show featured art work by students from the School Of The Arts (SOTA), and marks the start of a partnership between the museum and SOTA that will see art students in residence at 8Q sam, engaging with its architectural elements and artistic context through a series of lessons and activities. This residency will culminate in two further art exhibitions. The artworks featured in Abstractus are mostly works-in-progress, the results of projects undertaken by SOTA students in their art modules. Notably, these lessons are conducted by practising artists, which accounts for the more experimental and conceptual approaches that inform the artworks. Two of the artist-teachers, Tan Kai Syng and Grace Tan, have also previously exhibited at 8Q sam, in its inaugural exhibition 8Q-Rate: School. Expect to encounter a wide range of artworks, ranging from pieces which approach traditional media in unconventional ways, to works which make use of new media such as video and sound. Gallery 1.11 is envisioned as a space to showcase work by art students, and an opportunity to engage young people, hence building the artistic community of tomorrow. Its vision is summed up in its logo, which plays on two concepts. The first is based on museum terminology, which refers to traditional gallery spaces as ‘white cubes’. The second is based on the idea of the Rubik’s cube, which encourages creativity and lateral thinking through play. Gallery 1.11’s multi-coloured cube suggests a desire to rethink conventional museum spaces and their functions, and redefine these through imagination and hands-on engagement.
