Sarong KebayaPeranakan Fashion and its International Sources |
![]() Till 26 Feb 2012, Peranakan Museum, 39 Armenian Street The elegant and timeless Peranakan kebaya takes centre stage in an exhibition that traces its origins through the centuries across many cultures. Fashion connects the Peranakan culture of Singapore and the surrounding region with trading communities across the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. The evolution of the kebaya began as early as the 16th century, and the dress continued to absorb influences from many cultures up till today. Using brilliant fabrics, delicate embroidery, and fine lacework, the kebaya reflects the many cultures that contributed to its development. Curated by the expert Peter Lee and Peranakan Museum curator Jackie Yoong, the exhibition provides new insight into the stylistic evolution of Peranakan fashion, in particular the many sources from many different regions. New scholarly insights, to be published in a catalogue later in the year, is combined with beautiful works never before exhibited. Because textiles are sensitive to light over time, approximately half of the exhibition will be rotated in October 2011 in order to show new examples to the public.
