The news of Malaysian filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad’s sudden death hit public consciousness late July this year, leaving behind an audience mourning the loss of a remarkable woman. Her body of work had touched local and international audiences, especially in her native country of Malaysia and also, Singapore. Afflicted with a stroke during a meeting on a media project, the filmmaker died at the young age of 51, after undergoing emergency brain surgery.

Graduation shows are interesting affairs. Not only will you get to see the culmination of a particular cohort’s works after spending a few years pursuing an art education, but also that particular school’s artistic direction. Sure the school might have posted their mandate on open-house brochures or well-maintained websites but it is when you encounter the student’s works, will you get a real sense of what has been happening in the workshops or critique sessions with the lecturers.

A Fresh Start

Since then, there’s been crazy development. The Esplanade’s opened its doors, censorship’s been relaxed, and companies have grown pretty adept at raking in crowds. Yet in the midst of this, we sometimes miss the bad old days: back when everyone was dirt poor but burning with revolutionary energy.
