Helping Youth to Gain Mastery and Rebuild Well-being

Creative processes can be empowering to our young generation. When teenagers engage in art making, they are in charge of the work: the choice of the materials, the scope, the intention, the making of the imagery and the product. They rebuild the “sense of hope, self-esteem, autonomy, and competence while offering opportunities for a safe and contained expression of feelings” (Malchiodi, 2003, p. 207). Art becomes a visual language for them, helping them to “rebuild the child’s sense of well-being” and “gain a sense of mastery” (Malchiodi, 2003, p. 212).
