John Low
gallerySingapore Biennaleaboutdate of birth: 1958country of origin: singapore The Singapore River has figured greatly in Singapore art history, as in the work of pioneer artists Georgette Chen and Liu Kang. It has also been in the imagination of past and present Singaporeans. John Low refers to the British painter John Constable's process of observing clouds in the sky (‘skying’) in his own study of how and why the Singapore River has been such a powerful visual and research subject. For his SB2011 project I have been skying, Low will collect, consider and collate empirical, theoretical and lived bodies of knowledge about the River and show how, as a culture, Singaporeans have made sense of their environment. Creating a multifarious, complex installation, Low's work reflects the life of the river – ever-present but with no particular end in sight. |
