Dear Readers,

Another gathering, another day. The hall was packed with over 2000 members, both male and female, attending the extraordinary general meeting of AWARE 1. The meeting had been convened to decide on the no-confidence motion against a month-old executive committee.

Though the public and media understanding of the issues with the new committee had to do with alleged homophobia, the discussions on the day soon veered to topics that included the details of the committee’s day-to-day operations, priorities, and monetary concerns. As loyal members of the organisation, including the founders, took the floor, others joined in. Many people, including representatives of other volunteer organisations, academics, professionals, and others from public service, contributed to the discussion, offering suggestions and alternatives while critiquing the actions and decisions of the committee. This perhaps was the most significant part of the nine-hour meeting that received massive media attention—when people came forward to propose alternatives.
