Dear Readers, It’s the month of the Biennale. And this time around, the organisers promise it will be more engaging, with a variety of ‘Outreach’ activities. Outreach also seems to be high on the agenda of the newly opened 8Q sam. The concept of education and outreach is not new to art initiatives that are largely propelled by public bodies and corporates, though both of them have slightly different motivations for ‘reaching out’, so to speak. But let’s return to outreach. If art outreach eventually aims to increase an understanding and, hence, appreciation of art, is this understanding a question of being acquainted with art through encounters such as a stroll into a biennale venue? But then there is the more important question – once the contact has been made, what then? What is ‘participating’ with respect to art, beyond physically being in the space? |
